Secret Space Escapes
Astronauts Robert Curbeam, Tom Jones, and Marsha Ivins as well as Lead Flight Director Bob Castle and Lead EVA Director Kerri Knotts detail the historic delivery of the Destiny laboratory module to the International Space Station in 2001. Following the successful installation of the lab, Curbeam and Jones perform a spacewalk to connect its lifelines. Without warning, highly toxic anhydrous ammonia, a cooling fluid essential to keeping the Destiny lab alive, engulfs Curbeam. The team must scramble to save the lab and themselves. In 2013, ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano and NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy embark on a spacewalk to conduct maintenance outside of the International Space Station (ISS). Russian ISS Commanders Fyodor Yurchikhin and Pavel Vinogradov detail how Parmitano's helmet fills with water and what begins as a slight malfunction turns into a near drowning. Russian Commanders Boris Volynov and Vladimir Shatalov recount Volynov's disastrous re-entry following 1969's historic Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5 docking missions. Despite a successful first-ever crew transfer between manned spacecraft, a series of technical problems sends Volynov's ship hurtling through the atmosphere with an obstructed heat shield and twisted parachute. The crash landing leaves Volynov severely injured, alone, and miles off course in the frigid Russian wilderness.
